ASOR LEADERSHIP SPEAKS OUT ON ISIL ATROCITIES
ASOR has been in the news lately regarding the recent destruction of cultural heritage in Syria and in Iraq. See below for recent mentions on CNN and the New York Times:
- Sturt Manning, Chair of ASOR’s Cultural Heritage Committee, appeared on the CNN website with his article, “Why ISIS Destroys Antiquities.”
- Susan Ackerman, ASOR President, was quoted in the New York Times article, “ISIS Bulldozing of Ancient Nimrud Site in Iraq Stirs Outrage.”
- The joint statement on cultural destruction in Iraq from ASOR and The Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD), Archaeological Institute of America (AIA), Society for American Archaeology (SAA), the American Anthropological Association (AAA), the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, and US/ICOMOS was included in the New York Times piece, “Deploring ISIS, Destroyer of a Civilization’s Art.”
