This collection contains glass plate negatives from the following excavations: Beth El, Beth Zur, Tel Beit Mirsim, Tel el Ful, Petra, and Khirbet Ader.

Series 1: Beth El
The Beth El negatives were taken during the 1934 excavation season. The site (also sometimes written as “Bethel”), located 10 miles outside of Jerusalem, was discovered in 1838 and excavated by William Albright.

Series 2: Beth Zur
The Beth Zur negatives were taken during the 1931 excavation season. William Albright was the first to identify the site, which is located about 19 miles south of Jerusalem. Excavations took place 1931 and again in 1957. Additional images in

Series 3: Tel Beit Mirsim
The Tel Beit Mirsim negatives were taken during the 1932 excavation season. The site was first excavated in four seasons, spanning from 1926 to 1932, with William Albright serving as field director.

Series 4: Tel el Ful
The Tel el Ful negatives were taken during the 1933 excavation season. Tel el Ful, Arabic for “mound of beans,” is located about 3 miles from Jerusalem and was identified in 1922 by William Albright. Although the identification was widely accepted by most archaeological and theological scholars, there continues to be debate regarding the accuracy of Albright’s conclusions.

Series 5: Miscellaneous
The Petra negatives were taken during the 1934 excavation season. Petra, an ancient city in Jordan, was discovered in 1812 by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. Excavations began in 1929.
The Khirbet Ader negatives were probably taken in the 1933 excavation season, when Nelson Glueck visited the site. Ader is a small, ancient city in the south of Jordan.
