JCS SUPPLEMENTAL SERIES

The Journal of Cuneiform Studies Supplemental Series (JCSSS) is a monograph series dedicated to publishing interpretive studies on the ancient Near East. Each volume is refereed and thoroughly edited. Four volumes have appeared to date, covering a broad array of issues: the social, economic and historical aspects of the Ur III and late Old Babylonian periods in Mesopotamia and the study of textual variation in Sumerian literature. The most recent volume, published in 2014, presents a collection of innovative studies on aspects of archaeology, archaeometry, bioarchaeology, geoarchaeology, and history on the site of Kültepe (ancient Kanesh) that will shed new light on social, political, and economic aspects of the Middle Bronze age (c. 2000-1700 BCE) in central Anatolia (present-day Turkey) and also in Upper Mesopotamia (Northern Syria and Iraq). This presentation reveals the broad goal of the new Kültepe archaeological team, which is dedicated to developing a new synthetic research paradigm to investigate issues of trade, colonialism, ethnicity, art, identity, and urbanization in the Near East.

Current Research at Kültepe-Kanesh
This book contains revised versions of papers presented at a special session that took place during the 2012 meeting of ASOR, dedicated to the celebrated site of Kültepe, the urban center of the second millennium BCE state of Kanesh in Anatolia. The material remains and the more than 23,500 cuneiform tablets unearthed at the site shed light on social, political, and economic aspects of the Middle Bronze age (MBA; c. 2000-1700 years BC) in central Anatolia (present-day Turkey), but also in Upper Mesopotamia (Northern Syria and Iraq).
